Korean manufacturer Doosan Enerbility has announced it will collaborate with four public power companies to produce 10MW turbines in the country.
It has signed a memorandum of understanding with Korea Offshore Wind Power (KOWP), Korea East-West Power (EWP), Korea Southern Power (KOSPO), Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) and seven other small and medium enterprises in the wind sector to develop a locally made 10MW turbine.
The 10MW machine will have a rotor diameter of 205 metres.
The initiative was proposed as part of the second Renewable Energy R&D Project Grant Award competition hosted by the Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning (KETEP), part of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
The consortium is aiming for 70% local manufacturing content in the project.
Lead contractor of the project Doosan Enerbility will be in charge of the design, assembly, installation and demonstration of the 10MW turbine, and will also be participating in the reliability testing of the parts and the development of automated machines, the company said.
“This will be an opportunity to secure competitiveness for Korea’s ultra-large offshore wind turbines in the aspects of product quality, cost and delivery time,” said chief executive of Doosan Enerbility’s Power Services Business Group Seungwoo Sohn.
“We seek to lead the efforts for laying a solid foundation for energy security in Korea’s wind power industry and promoting the growth of Korea’s wind ecosystem, which has long been targeted actively by foreign wind turbine manufacturers,” he added.
The initiative is planning a demonstration project from 2027 onwards.
Other than Doosan Enerbility and the public power companies, the other small and medium enterprises collaborating on the project are Human Composites Co, Dongkuk S&C, Shilla Corporation, Woorim PTS, Sanil Electric, LSK, and Entec Electric & Electronic.
