Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction has signed a memorandum of understanding with Korea South-East Power Company (KOEN) for the promotion of offshore wind farms in Korea.
Under the terms of the deal, the two companies have agreed to cooperate on 2GW of projects being developed by KOEN in Gyeongin and Jeju island, as well as on the development of megawatt-class floating offshore wind power systems and complexes.
They also agreed to engage in technology exchanges for commercialisation of a 8MW large-capacity offshore wind turbine, a national project being executed by Doosan as the main contractor.
Doosan plans to commercialise an 8MW turbine by 2022.
Doosan Heavy plant EPC business group chief executive Inwon Park said: “This MoU should enable us to commercialise domestic offshore wind turbines by securing large-scale references.
“We will cooperate with KOEN to revitalize the wind power industry in Korea to keep ourselves aligned with the Korean government’s Green New Deal policy.”
Meanwhile, Doosan is also to participate in a green hydrogen demonstration project on Jeju island, which will use wind power to produce the gas.
Doosan has signed a MoU with 10 companies, including the Jeju Special Self-Governing Provincial Government, Korea Midland Power and Korea Gas Corporation for the Green Hydrogen Production, Storage and Utilization Demonstration Project.
The project is being hosted by Jeju Energy Corporation and supported by South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning.
The companies will collaborate on the development and demonstration of the green hydrogen project, a zero-carbon emissions project assessing the entire life cycle from wind power-based hydrogen production to storage, transport and utilisation.
The demo will utilise energy from Jeju Energy Corporation’s Dongbok and Bukchon wind farms.
It includes constructing a hydrogen production system that has the capacity of producing 600kg of hydrogen per day using 3MW of wind power, a hydrogen compression and storage system and a 2 megawatt-hour battery system for storing unused energy.
Doosan will design the hydrogen plant including the production, compression and storage systems, provide supervision and develop the energy management system.
The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2022, with the hydrogen to be used as fuel for buses operated on the Jeju island.
