Peel Ports Group’s Great Yarmouth has been selected as the construction base for the 714MW East Anglia 1 offshore wind farm off the Suffolk coast.

ScottishPower Renewables said today that up to £5m is set to be co-invested in Great Yarmouth ahead of construction work which will begin in 2018.

The deal was announced at the start of the Southern North Sea 2016 conference in Norwich today and comes on the back of last week’s positive final investment decision for the project.

The Port of Lowestoft has already been chosen as the operations and maintenance base for the lifespan of the project.

SPR managing director Jonathan Cole said: “East Anglia 1 is progressing quickly, and we are delighted that Peel Ports Great Yarmouth has been chosen to support construction and installation work on our project.

“We are committed to delivering local investment, job creation and training opportunities as part of this project, so it is pleasing that two of our earliest decisions have gone in favour of Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth.”

He added: “East Anglia 1 is the first of up to four projects we would like to build in the Southern North Sea, and we hope that our plans will continue to create jobs and investment in the region for decades to come.”

Great Yarmouth port director Richard Goffin said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with ScottishPower Renewables on the large scale turbine installation programme.

“The co-investment in the Port of Great Yarmouth further consolidates our position as a leading offshore energy port facility in the UK whilst providing valuable jobs and economic benefits to the region.”
