EDP Renewables is to open consultations on developing a second offshore wind farm in its Moray Firth development zone off the coast of Scotland.
The developer said today that it will kick off work on a western portion of the site next to the eastern zone where a 1.1GW wind farm has been consented since 2014.
Consultations on the new site are to get underway this month, EDPR said.
“Today we are announcing proposals to develop the Western area of our site to maximise renewable energy generation in the zone which was allocated to us by the Crown Estate,” said EDPR director of offshore Dan Finch.
“Moray Offshore Renewables received considerable support from local communities as we developed the Eastern Area of our site. We will be returning to those communities with events this summer which will be announced in the local press.”
Scottish energy minister Paul Wheelhouse added: “The Scottish Government is committed to the successful and sustainable development of an offshore wind sector and today’s announcement by EDPR to consult on the viability of the western development area in the Moray Firth is the next step in that process.
“It is essential that communities and organisations with an interest in this proposal have an opportunity to comment and welcome EDPR’s programme of engagement over the course of the summer to gauge opinion.”
