EDP Renewables is part of a consortium that is planning to develop an initial 500MW floating offshore wind farm off the coast of Ulsan in South Korea.
The other members of the KFWind consortium are WindPower Korea and Aker Solutions, with Principle Power to supply its WindFloat foundation technology for the project.
KFWind signed a memorandum of understanding with the city of Ulsan in January 2019 to cooperate on the development of floating wind and support the industrial development of the Ulsan region to serve as a manufacturing hub for domestic and overseas offshore wind markets.
The partners said that the Ulsan area is well-suited for commercialising floating wind, due to the combination of industry-leading shipyards, maritime expertise and port facilities in the region.
KFWind said it “foresees that a potential project will contribute with significant positive economic and environmental benefits to the local community”.
It added that it will work with local fisheries associations and stakeholders to ensure that the project is well-sited and developed responsibly.
