EDS HV Management has been appointed owner’s engineers to monitor cable manufacture for EDF Energy Renewables’ 41.5MW Blyth offshore wind demonstration project in Northumberland.
The project, to be located 5.7km off the UK’s northeast coast, will be the first to use 66kV cable.
EDS said it will monitor the cable on a 24/7 basis during manufacturing, testing and transportation.
The work includes reviewing and advising on the design of the cable, offering expertise on testing and quality assurance throughout the process.
The cables will be made by French company Nexans.
EDS already has a contract to carry out cable termination and testing at the project.
The wind farm is will initially comprise five MHI Vestas 8.3MW turbines, although it has consent for up to 15 turbines when fully constructed, EDS said.
The demo is expected to be up and running by the third quarter of 2017.
EDS group director Ryan Henderson said: “The move towards 66kV requires a whole new set of required skills and competence and as a business we are constantly investing to stay ahead of the game.”
