EU energy plans ‘outdated’

WindEurope says policy does not reflect falling offshore prices

European wind targets top spot

The EU needs to re-evaluate its Clean Energy Package in light of falling prices for offshore wind, according to WindEurope.

WindEurope chief executive Giles Dickson (pictured) said price levels for offshore wind have fallen quicker than expected, but EU energy policy plans and strategies at national level do not reflect the changed situation.

“One problem is that the impact assessment that served as a basis for the EU’s Clean Energy Package uses outdated price figures,” he said.

“In short, too many policymakers and opinion-formers think offshore wind is much more expensive than it really is – and many think it’s going to remain that way. Not enough people appreciate that it is already competitive. That needs to be corrected.”

WindEurope cited several examples of falling offshore wind prices, including the subsidy-free winning bids from EnBW for the 900MW He Dreiht project and from Dong Energy for the 240MW OWP West and 240MW Borkum Riffgrund West 2 wind farms in Germany’s first competitive auction.
