GE Offshore Wind and Hyundai Electric have signed a Memorandum of Understanding outlining initial plans for the establishment of a nacelle assembly factory in South Korea for putting together HaliadeX turbines.
The detailed timeline of any industrial development will depend on the volume of customers’ orders and their specific projects timing, GE said.
The move forms part of plans for a strategic industrial partnership to support the growth of offshore wind in South Korea.
GE offshore wind chief executive Jan Kjaersgaard said: “The companies’ strengths complement each other, and both will bring our unique expertise to support the development and installation of the 12GW of offshore wind forecasted to be built in South Korea by 2030.
“At GE Renewable Energy, we will bring our offshore expertise and the Haliade-X technology, and Hyundai Electric will bring its local expertise in Korean market knowledge and electrical equipment.
“GE and Hyundai Electric & Energy Systems will intensify the work to prepare and deploy our industrial plan, and we look forward to sharing further details on the next steps from an industry standpoint in line with customer commitments during the remainder of 2022.
“This initial step signals our common and strong commitment to growing offshorewind in South Korea.”
