Google and Shell have inked a power purchase agreement which will extend the lifespan of the Netherlands’ first offshore wind farm.
The agreement will keep the 108MW NoordzeeWind project (pictured) in operation for at least four years beyond its original 2027 decommissioning date.
The deal marks the first time a corporate PPA has extended the lifespan of an offshore wind farm.
Google has secured 100% of the wind farm’s 108MW capacity, enabling Shell to pursue permit extensions and invest in crucial upgrades.
Google’s energy strategy lead Enrique Frances said: “This initiative helps to keep existing carbon-free energy resources on the grid that would otherwise have retired.
“To date, we’ve supported over 1GW of clean energy generation capacity in the Netherlands through PPAs.
“We hope this inspires similar partnerships, ensuring that existing renewable energy assets facing retirement continue to contribute to a sustainable future.”
