GWS wins installation gig at Thor offshore wind farm

Global Wind Service has bagged an installation contract for RWE’s Thor offshore wind farm in the Danish North Sea.

The contract focuses on the installation of 72 secondary structures on the monopile foundations for the 1.1GW wind farm, which is located west of Nissum Fjord, Denmark.

Installation of the secondary structures is scheduled for execution in 2025 and will see a team of 60 technicians deployed across both white and blue-collar roles.

Since September 2024, GWS has been actively engaged in project preparations, working closely with the Thor wind farm team at RWE and specialist tool manufacturers.

Key activities have included developing lift plans and comprehensive process documentation, conducting mock-up trials, and health and safety planning.

Sales manager at GWS Adrian Yeaman said: “GWS is thrilled to be chosen by RWE to deliver this project and to continue our strong partnership in renewable energy.”

Chief commissioning officer at GWS Thomas Bak Mathiasen paid tribute to the GWS and RWE project management team as well as the GWS resourcing team.

He added: “It’s great to already see the different teams come together and collaborate as ‘one team’ in all matters and a testament to the strength of relationships at management and operational levels.”

It is not the first time GWS has partnered with RWE. In February last year, GWS and RWE signed a strategic three-year agreement to support RWE’s offshore wind fleet servicing unit in the UK and Germany.
