Iberdrola Deutschland and O2 Telefónica have signed a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) covering energy from the 476MW Baltic Eagle wind farm in the German North Sea.
The green electricity will be supplied from 2025 from the site north of the island of Rügen. The agreement provides for the supply of 3000 gigawatt hours (GWh) of renewable energy to O2 Telefónica for a term of 15 years, enabling it to supply more than 8000 of its current 28,000 mobile phone stations.
“Together with our long-standing customer O2 Telefónica, we are committed to a future of more sustainable and intelligent energy supply,” said Iberdrola Deutschland chief executive Felipe Montero.
“Companies with green products and services are playing an increasingly important role in driving forward the energy transition. Energy partnerships are the key to successful decarbonisation.
“We are delighted to be expanding our partnership with O2 Telefónica.”
O2 Telefónica chief financial officer Markus Rolle added: “The cooperation with Iberdrola Deutschland, which was expanded in the past financial year, directly supports our corporate climate protection goals.
“Through this contract alone, we are securing a sustainable power supply from renewable energies from Germany for around 8,000 mobile phone sites and thus making a contribution to the energy transition.”
