Iberdrola has officially opened the 350MW Wikinger wind farm 30km off the German island of Rugen.
The €1.4bn project is the third operational wind farm in the German Baltic Sea and marks the developer’s entry into the German offshore wind market.
Speaking at an official opening ceremony at the project’s operations and maintenance base in the port of Sassnitz-Mukran Iberdrola chief executive Ignacio Galan said the project showcased the “enormous potential” offshore wind offered developers.
“Wikinger represents a new step in our commitment to supplying clean, efficient and reliable electricity. We will continue to champion offshore wind technology since it enables us to drive the energy transition to a sustainable, low carbon economy,” he told reporters.
The project features 70 Siemens Gamesa AD 5-135 turbines, with tip heights reaching 165-metres. The hardware is mounted on four legged jacket foundations weighing 680 tonnes, produced by Spain’s Navantia and Denmark’s Bladt Industries.
Iberdrola now turns it attention to two more Baltic Sea projects that it secured at Germany’s second offshore auction held in April.
The developer is working to secure financial close for its 476MW Baltic Eagle and 10MW Wikinger Sud, which are due to be fully operational in 2023.
