Irish Sea Contractors has launched a subsea power cable repair system that could cut costs by up to 50%.
The solution is based on the premise of replicating a cable repair ship deck in subsea conditions.
It is designed to operate in water depths up to 200 metres for 220kV cabling.
The system’s ‘habitat’ can be pre-loaded with all required cable jointing and repair equipment prior to deployment, Irish Sea Contractors said.
The system can be used for both on-deck repair when a cable lift is unavoidable and can also be deployed on-deck cranes to carry out repairs under the sea, the company said.
It added that the prototype system is expected to be available for rental by the end of the year. An impression of the habitat to carry out the repairs is pictured.
Irish Sea Contractors has also developed a subsea jointer training programme to help with the uptake of the new repair solution.
