Jan De Nul has signed a contract with Synera Renewable Energy (SRE) to install export cables for the 495MW Formosa 4 offshore wind farm in Taiwan.
The Belgian marine contractor will transport, install and protect around 60 kilometres of subsea HVAC cables to bring green energy ashore from the project, which lies 20 kilometres off the coast of Miaoli County.
Installation works will begin in 2026 and continue into 2027, using the company’s cable-laying vessel Willem de Vlamingh.
Jan De Nul has also been named preferred contractor for export cable installation at SRE’s Formosa 6 project, located 55 kilometres southwest of Formosa 4.
Formosa 4 will feature 35 wind turbines generating enough clean energy to power around half a million homes.
Wouter Vermeersch, director of subsea cables offshore energy at Jan De Nul, said: “With this new contract for Formosa 4 and our appointment as preferred contractor for Formosa 6, we continue our journey in Taiwan.
“We are currently installing cables for the Greater Changhua 2b & 4 offshore wind farms, and preparing the installation of export cables for Fengmiao 1 in 2026. This provides us with a continuous project portfolio outlook in Taiwan through 2028.”
Vermeersch added: “We have been at the forefront in supporting Taiwan towards its pathway to net-zero emissions in 2050.”
The new contract follows the company receiving an award from the Belgian Embassy in Taiwan recognising its long-term contribution to offshore wind development.
Trade between Belgium and Taiwan has more than doubled between 2020 and 2025, according to the embassy.
