The German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has given its approval to WPD’s proposed 865MW Gennaker wind farm in the Baltic Sea.
Up to 103 turbines are planned at the project. Siemens Gamesa 8.4MW units with 154-metre rotors are included in planning.
WPD said the Gennaker would help Germany’s so-called Energiewende, or “energy transition”, toward generating 65% of its electricity from renewable energy sources by 2035.
However, the project will likely still need extra approval from federal regulators to proceed, it is understood.
Gennakar is planned for waters that are currently not included in German maritime and hydrographic agency BSH’s offshore wind farm auction and development plans for 2025 to 2030.
According to the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, state approval was also granted for two offshore substations for the wind farm.
