South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering and Korea Electric Power Technology Company (KEPCO) are partnering to make a joint push into the floating offshore wind substation market.
They have signed a memorandum of understanding to research and develop floating offshore substations designed for both deep and shallow waters.
The pair plan to target both the emerging South Korea market, as well as elsewhere.
Daewoo will lead on the research side, drawing on its offshore design and production technology.
KEPCO brings its electrical equipment design and construction technology to the project.
Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering executive director of technology Jaehyuk Woo said: “This cooperation is an opportunity to make full use of the technological competitiveness that the company has built up so far.”
KEPCO energy business head Kim Dong-gyu said: “Through the development of offshore wind power substations, we are able to further expand our business scope.”
