Orsted has contracted South Korean companies Samkang M&T and Hyundai Engineering & Steel Industries to supply jacket foundations for the 900MW Changhua 1&2a offshore wind farm off Taiwan.
Samkang M&T will supply 27 jackets, while Hyundai Engineering & Steel Industries will deliver 28 by March 2021, Orsted said.
It added that both suppliers have existing factory facilities that have met all pre-qualification criteria.
In November last year, Orsted contracted Taiwanese outfit Sing Da Marine Structure Corporation, a subsidiary of China Steel Corporation, to supply 56 jackets for the project.
Changhua 1&2a will be located 35-50km off the coast of Changhua County and is expected to be constructed in 2021 and 2022.
Orsted Asia-Pacific president Matthias Bausenwein said: “Korean suppliers in various areas have been supplying to offshore wind projects in Europe for years.
“For example, LS Cable & System was recently awarded a contract for our Hornsea 2 project in the UK.
“We are delighted for the contract signing today and look forward to collaborating and maturing Korean suppliers also for their domestic market in the future.”
“There is a great potential for offshore wind in South Korea due to strong fundamental needs including lack of space onshore and high dependence on imports of fossil fuels.
“The government has set a target of 12GW offshore wind towards by 2030, which is a positive sign for the South Korean offshore wind market.”
