A coalition of more than 60 groups is calling on New York State governor Andrew Cuomo to commit to 5GW of offshore wind by 2025.
The groups say they represent hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers and include the National Wildlife Federation, the National Research Defense Council, the American Lung Association of the Northeast, Renewable Energy Long Island and dozens of other environmental and civic organizations.
“New York has a world class wind resource far off our shores that can deliver clean, reliable power right where we need it,” the groups said in a letter to Cuomo (pictured).
“We urge you to finalize a ‘50 by 30′ clean energy standard without further delay and ensure that offshore wind power plays a major role in meeting these important climate and clean energy targets.”
The state has a 50% renewable energy goal and federal regulators are preparing to hold a commercial lease auction later this year.
The coalition asked the governor to capitalize on near-term opportunities to advance offshore wind projects off Long Island and New York City.
