Polish developers PKN Orlen and PGE Group have won the latest batch of leases in the country’s offshore wind tender.
The former said it has bagged the rights to five sites in the Baltic Sea totalling 5.2GW of capacity.
The concessions secured are located near Kołobrzeg and Łeba, approximately 30km from the coastline.
PKN Orlen president Daniel Obajtek said it is best-placed to carry out large-scale investments in the country.
“This is the result of already gained experience, e.g. in the implementation of the Baltic Power project and the construction of the first installation terminal for offshore wind farms in Poland,” he said.
“We will use our competences in the construction of further farms, including five new concessions that we have just secured.”
PGE has meanwhile bagged one zone on top of leases granted previously in the tender.
“The new area will be reflected in the update of the PGE Group’s strategy. Poland needs new own generation capacity so that in the coming years it will be possible to reduce the increase in electricity costs and, consequently, to reduce electricity bills for consumersm,” said president Wojciech Dąbrowski.
“That is why we invest in renewable energy sources, including wind farms in the Baltic Sea. Energy from offshore wind farms will be cheaper, because its production does not involve incurring fees for CO2 emissions.
“In this respect, decisions regarding location permits for new offshore wind farms are extremely important to us, as they will allow us to achieve the strategic goals of the PGE Group and strengthen Poland’s energy security.”
