Maersk Offshore Wind has officially named its wind turbine installation vessel Maersk Viridis at a ceremony held on the vessel’s main deck.
The company said the vessel was formally named by godmother Charlotte Nørkjær Larsen with a bottle of champagne smashed against the main crane pedestal.
Maersk Offshore Wind added that the 40,000 tonne vessel is the first wind turbine installation vessel of its style, scale and design.
The captain and crew led guided tours around the vessel for guests following the ceremony.
The name Viridis is Latin for “green” and was chosen to reflect the role the vessel will play in supporting the transition towards renewable and sustainable energy sources.
Maersk Viridis will now prepare to sail to the US where it will support offshore wind installation work.
