US Shell and Ocean Winds JV Mayflower Wind has been renamed SouthCoast Wind Energy.
This change better reflects the company’s commitment to the people, businesses and communities of the South Coast, the owners said.
SouthCoast Wind chief executive Francis Slingsby (pictured) said: “We are proud to call the South Coast home and recognise the importance this area has to the success of our project.
“SouthCoast Wind remains steadfast in its commitment to being an integral community partner and investing in economic development, education and training.”
The company’s full offshore wind lease area has a capacity of 2400MW – enough electricity to power more than 1 million homes and businesses.
The first 1200MW will connect to the electric grid at Brayton Point in Somerset, Massachusetts, the former home of the region’s largest coal plant.
SouthCoast Wind also plans to connect to the regional electric grid at a second location in Falmouth, Massachusetts.
Late last year, Ocean Winds and Shell reaffirmed that the offshore wind farm off the US East Coast remained “viable” after regulators raised concerns over their commitment to the project.
