EDF Renewables North America has selected MHI Vestas as preferred turbine supplier for the 25MW Nautilus offshore wind farm off the coast of New Jersey.
Under the terms of the deal, MHI Vestas will supply three V164-8.3MW machines for the project, the first time the model will be deployed in the US.
MHI Vestas chief executive Philippe Kavafyan said: “We’re proud to be named as preferred supplier for the Nautilus offshore wind project and look forward to bringing our flagship V164 turbine to the US market with EDF Renewables.
“Nautilus, already permitted, provides us the timely opportunity to bring our technology and experience to the US offshore market.
“The knowledge gained on this project will help New Jersey achieve its clean energy goals and lay the groundwork for future offshore wind deployment along the eastern seaboard.”
EDF Renewables North America president and chief executive Tristan Grimbert said: “The agreement today demonstrates our commitment to offshore wind and our ambition to establish New Jersey at the forefront of the US offshore industry.
“EDF Renewables has a long-standing relationship with MHI Vestas in the UK offshore sector, as well as with its parent company, Vestas, having installed more than 2GW of turbines onshore in North America.
“We are pleased to work with MHI Vestas to deliver the key component to our first offshore project that will deliver clean energy and economic benefits in the form of supply chain and jobs to the region.”
Nautilus is already fully permitted and is currently under review by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities for approval of an offshore renewable energy credit agreement.
It could be operational by 2020, MHI Vestas said.
