MHI Vestas has fulfilled its commercial and investment milestones with 600MW of turbines on the order books just two years after the joint venture was launched.
Chief executive Jens Tommerup said he is “sleeping well at night” following progress that has seen the company position itself as the second force in the offshore turbine manufacturing business behind Siemens with a healthy pipeline of UK and European orders.
To reflect this success, employees at the company have risen from 250 in 2014 to 1100.
Investment in an Isle of Wight blade manufacturing facility is giving confidence to the UK supply chain, said Tommerup, who reiterated the company’s commitment to the country in terms of sales and investment.
“My ambition is to build a healthy and strong position in the UK,” he said during a visit to London today.
Tommerup said the company’s 8MW turbine is now rolling off the production line for installation at Dong’s 258MW Burbo Bank 2.
He said the platform has many years ahead of it, is the most tested turbine in history and has exceeded expectations.
The Danish/Japanese venture is also now fully capitalised and will need no more cash from MHI, Tommerup added.
