MHI Vestas has confirmed a ‘firm and unconditional’ supply contract for beefed-up V164 turbines at Dong’s 330MW Walney 3 East offshore wind farm in the UK.
The manufacturer said the long-gestating deal for next-generation hardware (pictured) is now over the finish line, including a five-year full-scope service contract.
MHI Vestas said the project’s 40 turbines would include a “power mode” to push capacity to 8.25MW.
“The use of a power mode demonstrates our ongoing focus of optimising our technology, continuing to provide greater value for our customers,” said chief executive Jens Tommerup.
Blades for the project will be produced at the MHI Vestas factory on the Isle of Wight, where over 200 employees commenced serial production of 80-metre blades for Dong’s Burbo 2 project in May 2015.
Walney 3 is due online before the end of the decade. Siemens is supplying 7MW hardware to the 330MW Walney 3 West.
