Air traffic services company NATS is to provide radar mitigation for Vattenfall’s 92.4MW Aberdeen offshore wind farm off the northeast coast of Scotland.
The work will involve NATS ‘blanking’ the project, also known as the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre, on its Perwinnes radar.
A wide area multilateration radar system will also be installed to infill the area and provide contingency coverage for helicopters operating offshore from Aberdeen airport, NATS said.
It added that the mitigation allows Vattenfall to proceed with the construction of the 11-turbine project.
NATS said wind turbines can cause interference to radar, appearing as ‘clutter’ that can potentially hide or be mistaken for aircraft.
It will work with the developer to mitigate the impact using a range of possible techniques that will ensure the ongoing safety of air traffic, while allowing the development to continue.
