Northland Power is pursuing two potential offshore wind projects to bid into Taiwan’s upcoming third round tender, which starts in 2022.
With a combined capacity of up to 1.8GW, the two projects, called NorthWind and CanWind, are off the coasts of Taichung county and Chunghwa.
Northland’s round three project director Monica Liu said: “The selected sites have been carefully screened.
“They are relatively far from the coast and ensure that environmentally sensitive areas, navigation channels and other restricted areas are not affected.”
Canada-based Northland is already developing the 1044MW Hai Long offshore project in Taiwan.
Northland’s executive vice president of development David Povall said: “We continue to be committed to long-term investments in the Taiwanese offshore wind market, and we look forward to exploring these new opportunities and continuing to apply our global offshore wind expertise in helping Taiwan achieve its renewable energy targets.”
Globally, Northland has developed, constructed and operates 1.2GW of offshore wind capacity including the Gemini, Nordsee One and Deutsche Bucht projects in Northern Europe.
It also recently extended its development interests to Poland alongside those in Japan and Korea.
Northland’s new head of Taiwan Felipe Montero said: “These new projects builds on our long-term strategy in Taiwan.
“We are excited to continue our role in Taiwan’s energy transformation as the island looks to the future and fulfills its goal of developing an additional 10GW of offshore wind between 2026 to 2035.”
