Nuon has decided to decommission the 2MW Lely offshore wind farm in the Netherlands after 22 years in service.
The company started dismantling the four-turbine facility on the Ijsselmeer lake last week, in what is its first decommissioning of an offshore wind farm, it said.
The move comes after a rotor head and blades fell off one of its Nedwind N40/500 machines in December 2014 due to metal fatigue.
Nuon said that the other turbines were found to be in working order, but that it preferred to dismantle the facility because it was already at the end of its life and thus less profitable.
The 60-metre turbines are located around 750 metres from the shore above seven to 10 metres of water.
