Authorities in New York state have completed the first of three years’ worth of aerial surveys of bird and marine mammal life, ahead of the planned development of offshore wind farms.
New York is aiming to generate 50% of its electricity from renewable energy sources by 2030 and would like develop 2.4GW of offshore wind capacity.
The survey results will be used to identify areas of lower biological activity, where offshore wind developments may be more feasible.
“This survey underscores the importance of our commitment to the preservation of the wildlife in our coastal areas and our commitment to environmental stewardship as we develop offshore wind,” New York State Energy Research and Development Authority chief executive Alicia Barton said.
