EDP Renewables and Engie’s offshore wind joint venture Ocean Winds is launching in the US, following approval by US authorities for the merger of their respective offshore businesses.
Ocean Winds North America is a 50% owner of Mayflower Wind, which is developing an 804MW project off the coast of Massachusetts.
Mayflower Wind’s federal lease area, awarded in December 2018, has the potential to reach over 1600 MW.
Ocean Winds North America is also a partner in the Redwood Coast floating offshore wind project, off the coast of California.
The joint venture will fill EDPR’s role in the Redwood Coast public-private consortium committed to developing an offshore wind project using floating platform technology off the coast of Humboldt County in northern California.
Ocean Winds CEO Spyros Martinis said: “OW will be a major element in creating the new clean, sustainable, and prosperous economy that Americans are demanding and OW North America can help to build that future.
“OW North America from Day One is in the business of developing and delivering real offshore wind projects.”
Ocean Winds has 5.5GW of “committed offshore assets” comprising 1.5GW under construction and 4GW under development, with the target of reaching 5-7GW of projects in operation or under construction and 5-10GW under advanced development by the middle of this decade.
