Investment in Europe’s offshore wind sector reached €14bn in the first six months of 2016, which was more than the whole of 2015, a report by data provider Planet OS says.
The Offshore Wind Energy 2016 Market Report said 75% of the growth came in the UK, with European capacity increasing 4.2% during the period.
The increased offshore investment came despite a 25% drop in overall renewable energy investments in 2016 compared with last year, Planet OS said.
“Even though just 3% of all renewable capacity comes from offshore wind power, we believe that greater potential project sizes, higher offshore wind speeds and greater aesthetic appeal position this renewable energy source as the most likely to experience the greatest growth rates in the coming years,” the report said.
