Swedish renewables developer OX2 has started work on environment impact assessments for two offshore wind farms off the western coast of Finland.
The Halla and Laine projects would be located in the Gulf of Bothnia and feature up to 310 turbines in total.
The projects are currently in a very preliminary stage, and the actual electricity production would only start at the end of this decade, OX2 said.
OX2 has also applied to the Finnish Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment for exploration permits for the wind farms to carry surveys.
OX2 Finland country manager Teemu Loikkanen said Halla’s location close to Raahe could provide opportunities for cooperation with SSAB, a company seeking to produce fossil-free steel.
He said: “As a matter of fact, one option is that the grid connection for the project will be made directly to SSAB’s mill.”
