Polish company PKN Orlen has started geological surveys of offshore wind sites in the Baltic Sea off the coast of Poland.
The results of the survey will allow PKN Orlen to prepare preliminary technical projects for the construction of an offshore wind project.
The developer is also carrying out environmental research and wind measurements as part of its offshore wind license conditions.
The research area, which covers 131 square km, is located 23km north of the Baltic Sea coastline, off of Choczew and Leba.
The survey works include drilling a series of boreholes to a depth of several dozen meters below the seabed.
The collected soil samples will be laboratory tested for physical and mechanical properties and load capacity. The data will inform the most suitable turbine foundation structures.
PKN Orlen holds a license to build wind farms in the Baltic Sea with a maximum total capacity of up to 1200MW.
