The Port of Rotterdam has taken the wraps off plans to create a 70-hectare harbour to support the offshore wind industry.
Offshore Center Maasvlakte 2 (OCMV2) in the Prinses Alexiahaven will be dedicated to offshore wind plus oil and gas platform decommissioning.
The port authority said it would make a start on the scheme “as soon as possible” by reclaiming the first 30 hectares of land and installing a heavy load deep sea quay wall, initially 600 metres long.
The first tenants are expected to be in place and operational in 2019.
OCMV2 could be extended by a further 40 hectares and 1000 metres of quay wall.
“The construction of offshore wind farms is a huge growth market. This requires a specialized port area for the construction and maintenance of those parks and we would like to provide that,” said Rotterdam port authority chief executive Allard Castelein.
