RenewableUK Cymru is urging the Welsh Government to make necessary investments in the country’s ports to ensure they are offshore wind-ready.
RUK Cymru reiterated its message that it is vital that investment is made to enable Welsh ports to play their part fully in the journey to a net zero Wales.
The association published its comments in response to a story on the BBC Wales news web site about how there are fears that Wales could lose out on jobs and investment from offshore wind because ports are not well equipped enough.
The BBC news report quoted Jim O’Toole, managing director of Port of Mostyn, in Flintshire, who said opportunities could be threatened because no port in north Wales was well enough equipped to handle the larger turbines being planned now.
RenewableUK Cymru added that it will be working with its members to identify the supply chain opportunities, barriers and skills development that is needed to make port investments happen.
The group called on Welsh Government at the beginning of its sixth term in 2021 to make sure that adequate resources were directed to supporting Welsh ports so they could bid for the infrastructure adaptation funding required to make the necessary upgrades.
