RWE and Amazon sign Nordseecluster B PPA

RWE and Amazon sign Nordseecluster B PPA

RWE and Amazon have signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for 110MW from the 660MW Nordseecluster B offshore wind farm in the German North Sea.

The companies said the agreement builds on their 2025 strategic framework to support Amazon’s carbon-free energy goals and RWE’s digital transformation.

According to the partners, the 110MW is expected to generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of more than 139,000 German households annually.

The Nordseecluster project lies around 50 kilometres north of the island of Juist.

Nordseecluster A totals 660MW and is due online in early 2027, while the 900MW Nordseecluster B is scheduled to begin commercial operation in 2029.

The wind farm is a joint project between RWE, which holds 51%, and Norges Bank Investment Management, which holds 49%.

Ulf Kerstin, chief commercial officer at RWE Supply & Trading, said: “Power Purchase Agreements like this one with Amazon are crucial for accelerating Germany’s decarbonisation while strengthening long-term security of supply.”

He added: “By enabling large-scale offshore projects such as the Nordseecluster, we can bring more reliable, carbon-free electricity onto the grid and support a resilient energy system.”

Amazon has a goal to be net-zero carbon across its operations by 2040.

In Germany, Amazon already has six onsite solar projects and the new deal with RWE is its fourth large-scale offshore wind PPA in the country.

Combined, these 10 projects have a capacity of more than 790MW and are expected to generate enough renewable energy to power the equivalent of more than 1,000,000 German homes annually once operational.

Rocco Bräuniger, country manager of Amazon in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, said: “Germany is transitioning to an energy future that is modern and carbon-free, and this agreement with RWE helps advance that vision.”

He stated: “As Amazon works toward net-zero carbon by 2040, we continue enabling projects that strengthen Germany’s renewable energy capacity for generations to come.”

Globally, Amazon has contracted more than 1GW of renewable capacity across multiple RWE projects.

This latest PPA marks the first collaboration between the companies outside the United States.
