RWE Renewables is to vary the size of its up to 1100MW Awel y Môr offshore wind project off the north Wales coast following a statutory consultation.
Awel y Môr will be reduced from a maximum of 91 turbines to 35-50 turbines, according to a project newsletter.
RWE said the final amount installed will depend on the size of the turbines selected closer to the construction phase and that it is still envisaged to supply electricity to up to 500,000 homes per year.
RWE Renewables has also announced it will reduce the area of the offshore array to 78 kilometres squared, a reduction of 26% from the original 2020 project design.
The project originally had an array area of 106 kilometres squared, but this was reduced to 88 kilometres squared following a pre-formal consultation at the end of last year.
It has also decided to avoid use of Rhyl Gold Course for landfall, transition jointing bays, a temporary construction compound and any other above ground works.
The golf course was described as an important community hub in feedback to the consultation, which ran from 31 August to 11 October this year.
RWE intends to submit formal planning applications for Awel y Môr in spring 2022.
Tamsyn Rowe, Awel y Môr Project Manager, said: “The feedback we received from the consultation was extremely valuable and will assist in informing our next steps in the planning process. We have significantly reduced the maximum number of turbines, as the visual impact was a key concern for many.
She added: “We will continue to make design refinements as we move towards submitting our formal planning applications next year and continue to discuss these with interested parties, including relevant landowners.”
