ScottishPower has submitted plans to build a 1200MW wind farm off the coast of Suffolk in East Anglia.
The National Infrastructure team will consider the application for the East Anglia Three project and if approved it is hoped construction would start in 2021.
It follows on from the £2bn East Anglia One project that ScottishPower is currently developing and has capacity of up to 714MW and uses 102 turbines.
The project will use 172 wind turbines and comes on the day that the UK government has announced there will be funding for three auctions for offshore renewables over the course of this Parliament.
ScottishPower Renewables chief executive Keith Anderson said: “Our East Anglia One project was successful in the last government auction with a price of £119/MWh, which will make it the best value offshore wind farm ever developed in the UK. But we want to see costs come down even further.
“The offshore wind industry in the UK now benefits from more powerful and more efficient turbines. We have better vessels, more experience of working offshore, a healthier supply chain, a growing engineering skills base, increased capability to export our products and expertise around the globe, as well as ever increasing investment in UK infrastructure. All of these factors mean that costs are reducing quickly, and large projects are achievable.”
