The second of three platforms that make up the Windplus consortium’s 25MW WindFloat Atlantic floating project off Portugal has set off from the Port of Ferrol in Galicia.
Upon arrival at its final destination 20 kilometres off the coast of Viana do Castelo the device will be installed next to the first floating platform deployed in October.
The third and final platform, once it arrives to the site, will complete the first floating offshore wind farm in continental Europe.
The 30-metre tall floating platforms will each support a MHI Vestas 8.4MW turbine.
Windplus is a consortium made up of EDP Renewables, Engie, Repsol and Principle Power.
“Transportation of the three WindFloat Atlantic floating structures is a milestone in itself, as it sidesteps the need for towing craft designed specifically for this process and makes it possible for the project to be replicated in other geographies,” said EDPR in a statement.
The WindFloat Atlantic project builds on the success of the 2MW WindFloat1 prototype, which was operational off Portugal between 2011 and 2016.
