DNV GL has awarded a prototype certificate to Siemens Wind Power’s 8MW SWT-8.0-154 offshore wind turbine, which will allow the hardware to be installed at the Østerild test centre in Denmark.
The certification confirms that all relevant safety features on the turbine are in line with Danish Executive Order BEK 73:2013 and IEC 61400-22.
Installation at Østerild will allow Siemens to carry out a measurement campaign for the next phase of the type certification process that is required to bring the turbine to the market.
Siemens Wind Power Technology head Morten Rasmussen said: “We are proud to have received the prototype certificate at this early stage, allowing us to install our SWT-8.0-154 prototype according to plan.”
DNV GL head of renewables certification Mike Wöbbeking said: “We are happy that the certification journey of the Siemens direct drive offshore wind turbine continues from the 7MW to the even bigger 8MW turbine.”
Siemens said the main changes between the SWT-7.0-154 and the SWT-8.0-154 turbine are an upgraded generator, through the introduction of magnet technology that enables a rated power increase of more than 14%.
