Siemens Gamesa’s first B108 blades have left its offshore blade factory in Hull, the UK, for the 882MW Moray West offshore wind power project off Scotland.
The 108 metre-long blades are one of the largest being made in the UK, longer than the Wembley Stadium football pitch, and are specially built to perform under rough offshore conditions.
In total, 180 blades for the project’s 60 turbines will be manufactured in Hull, following the completion of a huge expansion to the plant.
The Siemens Gamesa turbines will be hosted on XXL monopiles.
The turbine maker stated: “We are proud to see our B108 blades embark on their ocean journey on our specialised service vessels with the aim to have the wind farm up and running by 2024.
“Moray West project will be able to generate over 882MW, capable of powering the equivalent of 1.3 million homes with clean energy.
“We look forward to continuing to work with Ocean Winds on this project.”
