Siemens Gamesa Fryslan feast

A consortium of Siemens Gamesa and Van Oord has been selected by Windpark Fryslan as the preferred contractor for the construction of the 383MW Fryslan nearshore wind farm at Ijsselmeer lake in the Netherlands.

The €500m project will comprise 89 Siemens Gamesa DD-130 4.3MW turbines with 130-metre rotor diameters and 109-metre hub heigts. Siemens Gamesa will also service the hardware for at least 16 years.

Van Oord will be responsible for balance of plant work, including the design, fabrication and installation of the foundations and cables. The company will also supply equipment to install the turbines.

The consortium also plans cooperate with local partners and support local initiatives in order to stimulate the Frisian economy.

Final contracts are expected to be signed later this year. Construction will start in 2019, with the wind farm scheduled to be fully operational by mid 2021.

Siemens Gamesa offshore business chief executive Andreas Nauen said: “We’re proud to once again bring our Siemens Gamesa direct drive wind turbine technology to the Ijsselmeer Lake with the Fryslan project.

“Partnering with Van Oord allows us as solid, experienced partners to bring a shared commitment to reducing the levelised cost of energy from offshore wind and providing clean energy to our customer Windpark Fryslan.”

Van Oord offshore wind managing director Arnoud Kuis said: “Building the Fryslan nearshore wind farm is an important step forward in meeting the climate objectives, both national as for the Province of Friesland. Contributing to the energy transition is contributing to a better world for future generations. It is great to part of this.”

The deal will also include the construction of a nature conservation island using soil from the Ijsselmeer Lake.

Two hectares of new land and 25 hectares of sheltered shallow water will be created. The island will be used during construction of the wind and will then be turned into a nature conservation area.
