Siemens Gamesa lands 2.6GW Dominion deal with 14MW unit

Siemens Gamesa lands 2.6GW Dominion deal with 14MW unit

Siemens Gamesa has secured a second major order for its 14MW turbine from the 2640MW Dominion Energy Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) commercial project.

The exact number of units needed for the project is yet to be confirmed based on site-specific conditions, Siemens Gamesa said in a statement.

All turbine installations are expected to be completed by 2026.

The agreement is subject to certain conditions including Dominion Energy’s final investment decision, governmental permitting, and other required approvals, Siemens Gamesa said.

Once online, the project is expected to provide enough clean energy to power 650,000 homes at rated wind speed.

Dominion Energy’s CVOW commercial project will be a crucial building block to help the US state of Virginia meet its clean energy goals established by the Virginia Clean Economy Act, which sets Virginia on the path to 100% clean energy by 2045.

“Siemens Gamesa continues to work with local stakeholders to investigate a potential blade manufacturing facility for its turbines on the US east coast, potentially the first facility custom-built to manufacture components for the SG 14-222,” the firm said.

Decisions on sourcing and supply chain to serve the US market are expected to be made within the next year, it added.

Siemens Gamesa Offshore Business Unit chief executive Andreas Nauen said: “Dominion Energy’s selection of the SG 14-222 DD offshore wind turbine for deployment is an important next step for the sizable project, the US offshore wind industry, and the global offshore wind industry.”

Siemens Gamesa has also been lined up to deliver its new 14MW turbine for the 300MW Hai Long 2 offshore wind farm off Taiwan.
