Siemens Gamesa has scrapped plans to build an offshore wind turbine OEM blade facility at the Portsmouth Marine Terminal, Virginia, US.
The turbine manufacturer abandoned the $200m scheme, saying it had discontinued plans to build and operate the plant because development milestones to establish the facility could not be met.
The move is a fresh blow to the US offshore sector after Orsted scrapped its Ocean Winds 1 and 2 sites off the coast of New Jersey.
The Virginia factory has been envisioned to support supply of the patented Siemens Gamesa Offshore IntegralBlades and was intended to support Dominion Energy’s 2.6GW Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project.
The abandoning of the plant will not affect the Dominion project, with the Spain-based Siemens Gamesa instead supplying turbines from its European facilities.
