Spanish companies EnerOcean and Ghenova have assembled the prototype W2Power multi-turbine floating offshore wind platform at the Astican shipyard in Gran Canaria.
The platform, which includes two 6MW turbines, will be installed at the Plocan test site in the Canary Islands in the coming weeks, Ghenova said.
EnerOcean president and technical director Pedro Mayorga said: “This prototype is the result of more than 10 years of systematic research, technical collaboration and technological innovation.
“It is a very important milestone for us and for the wind energy sector in general, as we move towards greater efficiency and profitability.”
Ghenova carried out work related to hydrostatic and hydrodynamic response and the structureal behaviour of the platform.
UK outfit Tension Tech International has provided technology for W2Power’s mooring system.
