President Donald Trump’s stoppage of Orsted’s 924MW Sunrise Wind project is costing the developer upward of $1m per day, and a complete cancellation of the project would cost the Danish giant over $8bn.
The stoppage comes just months after Orsted raised $9.4bn in a rights issue to fund the construction of the 84 turbine array.
Lawyers representing the developer made the admission in a filing with the federal District Court in Washington, D.C., where Orsted filed a complaint yesterday against the Trump administration.
The developer also told the court that it had installed 44 out of the project’s 84 monopiles when work was halted on national security grounds, along with 16 miles of near-shore export cable, and the offshore converter station jacket and topside.
Throughout 2025 Orsted’s Marine Affairs unit met weekly with the US military’s Coast Guard, during which representatives from the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management and the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement were also present, including as recently as Monday of this week.
“During these meetings, neither USCG nor any other agency attending raised any national security concerns related to the Project,” Orsted’s lawyers wrote.
Turbine installation was scheduled to begin in late 2026, the company added.
The company has also filed a separate complaint and request for an injunction against the stoppage of its neighbouring 704MW Revolution Wind.
