Swiss energy company Axpo has taken over the power marketing of the 400MW Global Tech 1 offshore wind farm in the German North Sea.
Axpo’s German subsidiary became responsible for the overall direct marketing of all the output from Global Tech I from 1 January 2020, having secured the contract at the end of 2019.
Before, Axpo Deutschland was responsible for marketing just under a quarter of the power produced at the wind farm into the German market.
This corresponded to Axpo’s share in the wind farm, which holds an interest of 24.1%.
Global Tech I is located 140 kilometres off the German coast and was, at the time of its commissioning in late summer 2015, a pioneer project in the area of offshore wind in Germany, and also the first offshore wind farm with a substantial Swiss shareholding.
The wind farm comprises 80 5MW turbines.
Axpo origination co-head Johannes Pretel said: “Axpo Deutschland was involved at Global Tech I from the start as a marketer and was able to gain valuable experience in the direct marketing of offshore wind power over the years.
“When the option to market all the power came up, of course, we seized the opportunity.
“Higher annual utilisation rate is good for the climate.”
