Taiwanese developer Taiya Renewable Energy (TRE) will bid for the second phase of an offshore wind power zonal development and floating demonstration project, in the Taiwan Strait.
The auction will take place later in 2023.
Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs held a briefing on the floating wind demonstration project on 18 January sharing the relevant rules with wind developers, TRE said.
TRE won the auction in the first stage of zonal development in 2022 and has begun preparing for the floating wind demonstration auction bidding in 2023, including carrying out environmental impact assessments.
The developer has invited domestic and foreign investors interested in the development of Taiwan’s offshore wind power to cooperate with it in relation to the bid.
The strong currents in the Taiwan Strait could potentially help prove a range of floating wind technologies and TRE suggested the Taiwanese government broadens the base of prospective developers for the demonstration.
An increased number of developers could potentially explore the adoption of different floating technologies and prepare for the localisation efforts that would follow as the sector expands, TRE stated.
