Oil and gas joint venture Repsol Sinopec is to decommission the two-turbine Beatrice offshore wind demonstration project in the Moray Firth off northern Scotland.
The partners will take down the Repower 5MW machines as part of wider plans to wind down the larger Beatrice field some 90km northast of Inverness.
Respsol Sinopec said work would include “removal of the two demonstrator wind turbines, founded on steel jackets”.
It added: “There is no potential for their incorporation into either of the two wind farms being proposed for the outer Moray Firth.”
The latter refers to SSE’s under-construction 588MW Beatrice and EDPR’s adjacent 1GW Moray, which holds consent.
The Beatrice demo was built in 2007 as a joint venture between SSE and Talisman. The utility still owns a share in the project.
Work to remove the turbines is expected to take place between 2024 and 2027. Other assets to be decommissioned include drilling, production and support platforms, power cables and pipelines.
Ithaca Energy is responsible for the decommissioning of the related Jacky platform and pipelines tied into the Beatrice field.
The Beatrice field, which has stopped producing oil, was originally to be used as a training facility by the UK military. That plan has since been abandoned.
