A turbine has caught fire at GE Renewable Energy’s 25MW Arklow Bank offshore wind farm off east Ireland.
Smoke is billowing from one of seven machines spinning at the site off County Wicklow (pictured), according to eyewitnesses.
A GE Renewable Energy spokesperson stated: “An offshore wind turbine event has been reported on October 19th, 2022, at the Arklow Bank Offshore Windfarm located in the Irish Sea.
“There were no injuries. The Coast Guard has been notified.
“Once weather conditions permit and we can access the site safely, we will start working to determine the root cause of this event.”
The fire started at about 12 noon, it is understood.
Bad weather, including lightning, was in the area on Wednesday afternoon.
Thunderstorms are now reported to be moving north towards Dublin, with further lightning strikes detected near Lusk.
Arklow Bank is Ireland’s only offshore wind farm and has been online since 2004. It feature seven GE turbines.
SSE Renewables is planning an 800MW Arklow Bank 2 array in the area in the coming years.
