US Wind has commenced a marine survey to prepare the final layout design for a 750MW project off the Maryland coast it claims will be the America’s biggest offshore wind facility.
The offshore wind developer said it contracted Alpine Ocean Seismic Survey and its vessel R/V Shearwater to collect data along a 35 mile route between the project site and a power plant near Millsboro, Delaware.
The vessel will collect sediment samples to ensure the ground is safe for a power cable, US Wind said, adding that the work is expected to take two weeks.
The project is slated to have 187 turbines that could power 500,000 homes and is due to come online in early 2020.
“Over the coming months, we will be undertaking more activities to ensure the success of this project and position Maryland as the East Coast hub for the booming offshore wind industry,” US Wind director of project development Paul Rich said.
